In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's 2024-25 budget proposal, Representative Brad Roae from Crawford/Erie expressed concerns about the potential for tax increases in the future. Roae emphasized that his constituents are already struggling with record high inflation under President Joe Biden and cannot afford additional tax burdens.

Roae stated, "A tax increase about three years from now is the likely outcome if we pass Gov. Shapiro's budget proposal. You can't spend more than you take in and balance excessive budgets forever using reserve funds."

He further argued that the state budget should only grow at the rate of inflation and advocated for unanimous agreement to save reserve funds. Roae highlighted the importance of being prepared for potential economic downturns or natural disasters, stating, "As the Boy Scout motto states 'be prepared.' The governor's budget instead leaves us vulnerable and sets the table for a tax increase in the future."

While acknowledging that the budget proposal is just the first step in the yearly budget process, Roae expressed hope that Governor Shapiro would engage in honest negotiations to develop a realistic plan and move away from political campaign rhetoric.

It is important to note that this budget proposal will impact the 6th Legislative District, which includes various townships and boroughs in Crawford and Erie Counties. Representative Roae represents these areas and is focused on advocating for the best interests of his constituents.

At this stage, it remains to be seen how the budget process will unfold. However, Representative Roae's concerns about potential tax increases and the need for responsible budgeting reflect the ongoing discussions surrounding the state's financial future.
